The Academy of the Sacred Heart Athletic Program provides interscholastic competition for girls in Grades 5-12. At the basic level, athletes are instructed in fundamental skills and are introduced to the competitive phase of sports. The teams are divided by skill level so that from the onset the girls feel successful. The focus at this stage is on participation and skill acquisition rather than winning. In Grades 7 and 8, the athletes with advanced skills move into a more competitive situation. Balance is the key to Middle School athletics. In order to keep the younger girls interested, skill and challenge need to be balanced. When skill outweighs challenge, the athlete becomes bored. When challenge is overwhelming, anxiety may result and the student will discontinue play. The challenge is to balance the two so that sports are seen as fun.
The purpose of the athletic program at the Academy of the Sacred Heart is to provide an opportunity for physical, social, and emotional growth of the students through interscholastic competition. The program is designed to compete with the athletic programs of similar schools while remaining faithful to the philosophy of Sacred Heart education which focuses on the whole child. The program encourages both the athletic specialist and the multiple sport athlete.
Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, Softball,
Swimming, Cross Country, Tennis, Track & Field and Golf compete in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA).
The athletic fees for individual sports help to defray some of the cost of running a successful athletic program. These expenses include: coaches stipends; athletic trainer/sports medicine; officials fees; equipment; uniforms; rental fees for use of non-Academy of the Sacred Heart facilities for practices/competitions; LHSAA and other league fees; tournament and competition entry fees.
This year there will be a change in the way athletic fees will be billed and collected. Billing and collection of the athletic fees will be handled by the ASH Athletic Department. Upon selection to an athletic team students will receive a bill for their athletic fee. Payment of the athletic fee is due in full 7 days after the billing date. Students may give their payment to their coaches, athletic director, division secretary or payment may be mailed. Students will be held out of practices if payment is not received by the due date.
Refunds of fees will not be given after the 3rd week of practice.
