The language arts program uses children's literature and Rigby leveled readers designed to enable each child to master the skills involved in reading while allowing her to read as soon as she is ready. Stories from children's literature are enriched by a variety of activities, including journal writing and art projects. The program is designed to teach children a variety of reading strategies (phonics, context and picture clues, etc.) and provide a strong foundation for reading. The handwriting program is D'Nealian by Scott Foresman.
In mathematics, heavy emphasis is placed on mathematical thinking and the understanding of math in everyday life. The Scott-Foresman series aids in teaching basic concepts including patterning, estimation, counting, measurement, place value, graphing and the mastery of addition and subtraction facts. Calendar activities and manipulatives are used to develop analytical skills as the children create and solve problems.
The Houghton Mifflin social studies program is taught through a "hands-on" approach. The focus in social studies is on the history and traditions of New Orleans, basic map skills, and biographical studies of historical figures.
