The goal of the language arts program is to continue to teach and reinforce reading and writing skills for mastery and to foster an enjoyment of literature. In the reading program, students read age-appropriate novels as chosen by the teacher as a class as well as individual novel choices. Students explore plot, characters, and setting through class books and independent reading books. Third primary girls are avid journal writers. Fundamentals of spelling and grammar are taught throughout the year.

The major components of the mathematics program include the continued use of manipulatives, the teaching of multiplication and division from basic facts to more complex computations, and analytical thinking skills as the basis for problem solving through the Scott Foresman series. Other concepts include addition and subtraction with regrouping, fractions, decimals, computing elapsed time, and geometry. Computational speed becomes more important as the basic operations become more difficult.

The Houghton Mifflin social studies program explores the state of Louisiana, including state history, cultures, and geography. Map skills and geography are developed through a maps skills program and a study of Louisiana maps.
