New Orleans Saints spirit filled the Mater Campus on Monday morning. We began Black and Gold Day with a Mater Campus pep rally. Gumbo, the Saints mascot, greeted the girls in the carpool line and then moved inside to be part of the celebration. Mrs. Tompkins, one of our religion teachers, led us in an original prayer, followed by a few cheers and the singing of "When the Saints Go Marching In."
Many thanks.
. to all who attended the Mothers’ Club and Fathers’ Club meetings on Wednesday. We appreciate your interest and willingness to participate in the life of Sacred Heart.
.to the moms who helped with the NOSHC screenings this week. Thank you to Michelle Enright, Danielle Lane, Kelli Barnes, Ingrid Garvey, Gia Lovisa Toogood, Laura Brooks, Ellen Manning, Charlotte Hebert, Colleen Schenck, Millie Gaines, and Melissa Scandaliato for their dedicated service during the week.
.to Mrs. Janice Thomas Foulks, our counselor, for organizing the new student get together at recess on Wednesday, September 26th.
.to all who sent in Hearty Snacks. We received 165 bags back, and many of them were "filled to overflowing," providing more than one snack per bag. Each month, the families of one division of the school prepare bag lunches (Hearty Meals) or bags of snacks (Hearty Snacks) for people who are in need. The bags are sent to various social service agencies or schools in the city. We give the Mater Campus Hearty Snacks to the Good Shepherd School, an inner city elementary school for at-risk children.
.to Erin Sabludowsky and Meliss Saltaformaggio and some of our summer campers who painted a chair and donated it to Chairish the Children, the Children’s Museum annual auction.
. to all who supported the junior class wrapping paper fundraiser. The juniors appreciate your efforts on their behalf.

Back to Basics.
Manners of the Month: October
We are adding to our list of manners, this month focusing on using "please" and "thank you" when speaking with family members, friends, and teachers. Many girls often say, "I need more juice," or "Give me the pink crayon," and we are trying to teach them to be more polite in their requests and responses. "May I have more, please?" or "May I please use the marker next?" coupled with a polite "thank you," results in a winning combination of civil and courteous behavior. We ask you to help us by practicing at home. Encourage your daughter to use these words, and model for her by using them yourself.
Note from Nurse Joni:
If you stated on the emergency form that your child has asthma or allergies that have led or may lead to respiratory problems, please contact Nurse Joni Colvin at 269-1238 to discuss whether emergency medicine should be at school.
Carpool:
One of our carpool dads is stationed at the crosswalk to direct walkers across the street. If you are driving, please do not stop to let the walkers cross. We ask you to continue to St. Charles until the entire car line stretches to Carondelet. Once these cars are unloading, we ask the walkers to cross.
The carpool line begins at the corner of Napoleon and Carondelet Street. In the afternoon, please do not come down General Pershing to enter the LS carpool line. If you do so, you will be asked to turn the corner at St. Charles Avenue and get in the line. You will not be allowed to merge in the line from General Pershing.
Carpool signs help us not only call your carpool to the car but identify your car in the line as we load cars. Please keep your card visible until your daughter enters the car. This will expedite the loading process.
White Uniforms:
If you have a white uniform that you would like to sell or to lend to a PS student for Mater’s Feast, please email Toots Villere, tvillere@ashrosary.org. Uniforms should be cleaned and ironed.
Service Opportunities:
We are looking for places to take the children for service opportunities and outreach programs. If you have a place that you would recommend, please email Laurie Friedrichs at lfriedrichs@ashrosary.org.

Rosary Recycling:
The Middle School Recycling Project is underway again this year. A recycling bin has been placed in the Nims Center on our campus and at the back door on Carondelet Street. Aluminum cans only may be placed in the bin, and they will be collected by the middle school students on a regular basis. Please make sure to rinse out each can. In addition to collecting aluminum cans, the Middle School students, with the help of the Upper School Environment Club, will also collect newspapers for recycling. The first collection was September 7 and the fourth primary won the paper drive. The fourth primary girls will have free dress on Friday, October 5. The collection dates are October 5, November 2, and December 7. Drop off will be at the Rosary Campus, under the bridge on Carondelet Street. Please bag or tie the papers. Start saving those newspapers today! We encourage participation, and think this type of cross-division cooperation helps the girls to understand that despite the fact that we are in two locations, we remain one school. Moreover, as a school community we continue to live Goal III (social awareness which impels to action) and Goal IV (the building of community as a Christian value) of Sacred Heart education.

SACS Visitors:
On October 1-3, we will welcome representatives from SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) to the campus in conjunction with our school’s re-accreditation. You may recall that last year we were visited by representatives of ISAS (Independent Schools of the Southwest). Both of these groups require re-accreditation every ten years.
Book Fair and Boutique:
Our Book Fair will run next Monday-Friday (October 1-5). The Nims Center, located on the Mater Campus, will be filled with books and boutique items. The Book Fair chairs hope that you will use this time as an opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping. Although you may shop at any time during the week, don’t forget about the designated lunch for your daughter’s class. You are invited to come to school and have lunch with your daughter at 11:00 and then take her to the book fair. Lunch for parents will be $3.25 and must be paid by Friday, September 28. First primary’s day is Monday, fourth primary is Tuesday, third primary is Wednesday and second primary is Thursday. We hope you to see you at lunch next week.
Book Fair Times
Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Friday 7:30 a.m.-Noon
If you do not see what you are looking for at the Book Fair, please bring the voucher from Heartline to either the Metairie or Westbank location of Barnes and Noble (through October 7) and use it. The voucher is good for anything in the store. You may duplicate it as many times as you would like and give it to anyone. ASH receives 20% of all sales using the vouchers. Please see the October Heartline for more details on the voucher.
Celebrate Life Week at Sacred Heart:
The Archdiocese of New Orleans designated October 7, 2007 as Celebrate Life Sunday. At the Academy of the Sacred Heart, we will continue to "Celebrate Life" during the week of October 8-12. The Book of Isaiah in the Old Testament says it well; "I have called you by name, you are mine." Human life is a gift from God and each person God creates is called, known and loved by God. Each human life is special at each stage of growth.
Some of the activities that we have planned for our "Celebrate Life" week include the following: The Lower School will gather for a "Celebrate Life" Chapel on Tuesday, October 9 during our morning assembly time. Using symbols for each stage of human development, we will pray for our mothers and fathers, children all over the world, for teenagers and young people, for adults and all parents, for the elderly and the sick, and for doctors, nurses and caretakers. Each homeroom will also display a "Celebrate Life" poster with pictures of the students when they were babies. Each student should bring a picture of herself as a baby to school by October 5. If you prefer, you may scan or photocopy your original picture and send the copy to school.

School Pictures:
Your daughter’s school pictures arrived last week. Treasure them---the time goes by so quickly! If there is a problem with her photo (blurry, closed eyes, etc.), she may have a re-take on the class picture day which is scheduled for Friday, October 12. You must return the original picture package with all pictures in order for her to have a re-take.
Parent-Teacher Conferences:
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, October 17. This is a time for you to meet with your daughter’s teacher to discuss her progress. We will not have classes on this day and will only be having conference care for your daughter during your PTC. We will not be offering holiday care or PLUS. A conference letter will go home with your daughter on October 1st with the time of your daughter’s conference. If you do not receive it, please contact your daughter’s teacher.
Our Girls Love Their Dads!
The Fathers’ Club Father-Daughter Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for Saturday, October 27. A flyer was sent home last week detailing this event. The dads ask you to RSVP as soon as possible so they can provide the caterer with an accurate head count.
