The language arts program integrates all components of language (reading, writing, listening, speaking). Children write daily and become increasingly fluent readers as the year progresses. The Rigby Series forms the basis of the reading program. Cursive handwriting is taught in second primary.
Mathematics units continue the mastery of first primary skills with emphasis on place value and on instant recall of basic addition and subtraction facts through use of manipulatives and the Scott Foresman textbook series. The children strengthen their analytical and computational skills by applying their knowledge of facts in problem solving activities. Math in everyday life is studied through Mountain Math and enrichment activities.
The Houghton Mifflin social studies program integrates all components of neighborhoods through culture, geography, and history.
