September 12, 2008
It felt so right to be back at school this week. The girls seemed to be relieved to be with their classmates and teachers in a safe, familiar environment. We are so blessed to have each other and to be able to be together. Let us pray for our Texas neighbors as they prepare to weather Hurricane Ike-we know too well what they are going through.
We met together in the Chapel this morning to share prayers, songs, and stories about Mary, our Blessed Mother. The Church sets September 8 as Mary's birthday, and we wanted the girls to realize just how special Mary is to us. We gave each girl a fortune cookie and inside there was a fortune that stated one of the Goals of Sacred Heart education. Throughout her life, Mary demonstrated all of them. It is our good fortune that we are able to attend (and teach in!) a Sacred Heart school, and place where all are cherished and loved.
Mothers' Club and Fathers' Club:
Both groups have their first meetings on Wednesday, September 17. All are invited. This is a wonderful way to get involved, meet other parents, and help our school with its many projects. The meetings will take place on the Rosary Campus. The moms will meet at 8:00 a.m. in the Assembly Room and the dads will meet at 5:00 p.m. in the Dining Hall. The dads are eager to have more participation, and are looking for captains for each grade to help with this dad. Please make sure to talk to Steve Rueb, Fathers' Club President) if you would like to volunteer. You can also email him at srueb@dorseyco.com.
Pink Day:
Enclosed with this Childpost is a detailed letter about our "Paint the City Pink" event. The last day to turn in t-shirt orders is Monday, September 15. The Upper School students and faculty have teamed with other area high schools and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation on an exciting project to raise breast cancer awareness. On Thursday, September 18, volleyball teams from across the state will play each other to benefit the Foundation by "Painting the City Pink for the CURE." To show our support for this Upper School activity, on Thursday, September 18, students may wear pink "free dress" to school. Your daughter may wear pink shorts, pants, skirt, or blouse. They may also come to school with pink fingernail polish! Good luck to the ASH volleyball team and congratulations to the Upper School for sponsoring such a worthwhile project.
In conjunction with Pink Day, the 4th Grade will host a bake sale on September 18. Each item will cost 25¢, so we ask you to send a couple of quarters (in a ziplock bag with her name on it) to school with your daughter.
Ask your daughter about the "pink" snowballs we had for snack on Thursday to get ready for this event! Many thanks to Athletic Director Mike Barnes and Primary School Director Laurie Friedrichs for running the SnoWizard machine.
It's Bubble Day in Nursery!
Nursery parents are invited to celebrate Bubble Day on Friday, September 19, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. You probably already know from your daughter that she is learning all about the "deep blue sea" and its many creatures. She has also learned some poems and songs that she would like to share with you. If you cannot attend, please try to have a grandparent or special friend join her. This get-together is simple and informal, but will be oh-so-special if you are there.
For Your Information:
- Speech, Language, Hearing, Vision Screenings:
If you have not already done so, please send in your registration forms.
- Wrapping Paper Orders Due:
The wrapping paper order deadline has been extended because of last week's Hurricane Gustav interruption. The new deadline is Thursday, September 25.
- Archdiocesan Insurance:
The enclosed flyer provides you with information about the 2008-09 Student/Athletic Accident Program. Each ASH student is covered under this plan.
- Evacuation Planner:
Enclosed is a Hurricane and Severe Weather Evacuation Planner sent to us by WDSU, The Real Yellow Pages, and at&t. Let's hope we won't need it again this year-but keep it in a safe place!

School Pictures and Class Pictures:
Enclosed is your daughter's school picture. If your daughter needs a re-take (eyes closed, picture blurry, etc.), they are scheduled for Friday, September 26. Please return the earlier pictures (in the envelope).
If you would like a class picture of your daughter's 2008-09 homeroom, please complete the
outside of the envelope and return it with a check made payable to Raymar Photography. Class
pictures are scheduled for Friday, September 26.
Morning Arrival:
Little Hearts arrival begins no earlier than 7:30 a.m.
Preschool arrival begins no earlier than 7:15. Mrs. Leftwich is on duty at the reception desk at this time; however, she may not leave the desk and the other teachers and dads are not outside until about 7:40. If the front gate is closed, your daughter may ring the bell and Mrs. Leftwich will buzz her in. If you must get out of your car, please make sure you are not in the carpool line. You may park in the parking lot or across the street in a legal parking place.
Carpool Notes:
Arrival:
Please have your daughter to school on time. If she is tardy she misses the opportunity to interact with her classmates, to ease into the day's routine, and to hear her teacher's large group instructions. If you are late, accompany your daughter into the building and sign her in. Please do not walk her to her classroom or the Nims Center; a teacher will help her to get to the right place.
Dismissal:
Carpool is running fairly well, but please be patient as we work on providing the safest and most efficient method of receiving your daughter in the morning and getting her back to you in the afternoon. As most of you know, carpool becomes easier and more efficient after the first couple of weeks.
Please adhere to the procedures outlined in the handbook about carpool, and pay close attention to the following guidelines:
- Load and unload from the passenger side only.
- Display your letter, number, or name at all times on the passenger side. Do not remove until your carpool is loaded into your car.
- Do not use your cell phone after turning the corner at Carondelet and Gen. Pershing.
- During carpool, Gen. Pershing remains a through street. Beware of normal traffic when merging from the carpool line into this lane.
- Cross only at the crosswalks.
- Cooperate with the dads, teachers, and security on duty. All are doing their best to provide a safe, smooth, efficient carpool.
- Toddler Parents (or anyone walking in to drop off or pick up a child): You may not park on the right-hand side of either Carondelet or Gen. Pershing streets at noon or at 3:00 since this is where the carpool line forms. The city requires us to leave the center lanes open for through traffic. If the carpool line is blocked, we end up also blocking city traffic. We want to be good neighbors. Please use the parking lot.
- If your daughter will be picked up by someone who is not listed on your carpool form, we must have a note from you stating who will be picking her up. Please make certain that the note is dated and includes your child's first and last name (as well as yours), and the name of her homeroom teacher.
White Uniforms for PK and K:
A white dress uniform is required for your PK or K daughter. Each uniform is a special order from Julie LeCorgne (828-3776). Because it is hand-made, the deadline for orders is September 19. Please take care of this immediately. Your daughter will wear her white dress for the first time when we celebrate Mater's Feast on Monday, October 20.
Out and About:
The fall session of R.E.A.D. (Reading Enrichment and Development), created by local educator Marilyn Levin, will begin on September 22. This early literacy class is a wonderful way to extend your daughter's learning. Brochures are at the front desk or you may go to Marilyn's website, www.readnola.com.
