"Passing on instruction about God’s ways to my children, grandchildren, or any children God puts in my path, is essential. Am I teaching the children around me how to forgive and love?"
— from Catholic Update, "Day by Day Through Lent: Fasting From Our Clutter"
Family Fun Run/Walk:
A Fun Run Named Desire will take place tomorrow, March 1, at Audubon Park. Please meet at the Magazine Street entrance, Shelter #10. The race begins at 9:00.
Manners for the Month-March:
During March we will be working with the girls on saying "excuse me" and "I’m sorry." Sometimes the teachers observe that an inadvertent "bump" can escalate into a tiff between classmates when all that is really needed to circumvent the behavior is for them to use the right words. This takes time and practice, but they are learning. We ask you to help us by practicing at home.
Parent-Teacher Conferences:
The teachers are eager to tell you about your daughter’s progress during the second trimester. Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, March 12. There is no school for students on this day. Enclosed with this Childpost is a letter noting the time of your conference. If you need to re-schedule, please contact your daughter’s teacher as soon as possible.
"Early Years" Newsletter, Dining Hall Menu, March Class Newsletters:
Enclosed with this Childpost are all the monthly newsletters. We ask you to keep this information handy.
LH/PS Hearty Snacks:
Your daughter will have a Hearty Snack bag pinned to her book bag on Tuesday, March 4. We ask that she return it on Wednesday, March 5, filled with a snack item or two. The snacks we collect go to the students at The Good Shepherd School. Thank you for your generosity.
ASH Spring Play:
The Upper School drama group, The Avenue Players, will present Rogers and Hammerstein’s "Cinderella" as their spring production. This delightful musical is appropriate for all ages and is an easy way to introduce your young daughter to a theater experience. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students, and $3 for children (12 and under). You can purchase tickets in advance at http://www.seatyourself.biz/ash/shop or at the door (Assembly Room on the Rosary Campus). Performances are March 13-15 (Thursday and Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.).
2008 BOOK IT! Beginners Program:
The prekindergarten girls will participate in 2008 BOOK IT! Beginners during March and April. This read-aloud program, sponsored by Pizza Hut, encourages children to love and use books as sources of enjoyment as well as information. As you know, our teachers spend time everyday reading to the girls. They know that reading aloud is one of the most important aspects of their language development. It helps build vocabulary, receptive language, expressive language, and comprehension. Moreover, research shows that reading aloud to children is the single most important factor in raising readers. The prekindergarten teachers who attended this year’s NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) conference learned about BOOK IT! from other teachers and decided to incorporate into our existing program.
PK Parents: participation is important! Please read the enclosed letter to see how you can help make this program more meaningful for your daughter.
Carpool Reminders:
· Please remember to have your carpool number/letter/name visible in your right windshield until your daughter is in the car. If you remove it after her number/letter/name is announced on the walkie-talkie, the teacher who is actually putting your child in the car cannot double check.
· Carpool changes have become a problem. It is challenging to dismiss more than 300+ LH/PS/LS girls over the course of an hour. We ask that you send any known change in writing at the beginning of the school day (include your child’s full name and grade, driver’s name, the day’s date and date of the carpool change—also notify the regular carpool driver of any change or absence.) If you must call in a change, please do so no later than one hour prior to dismissal.
Birthday Invitations and Gifts:
We remind you of the school handbook policy that invitations or gifts cannot be brought to school for distribution, and that transportation arrangements to parties should be handled by the parents.
Toddler News-Toilet Training:
Please remember that according to ASH school policy, your daughter must be fully toilet trained in order to move into the Nursery class. This must be initiated at home, and the teachers are happy to help reinforce what you are doing. If you are having trouble getting started, you might want to look into Potty Training 101, presented by developmental psychologist Dr. Pat Blackwell. She will review the basics of potty training and include the following key elements in her talk:
· Reading your child’s readiness signs
· Implementing a sensitive, child-paced program
· Ways to avoid power struggles
· And advance the child’s self esteem
The class meets at Ochsner for Children in Metairie (4901 Vets.-Rothschild Pediatrics) on March 13, at 6:30 p.m... Cost is $30 per family. See web www.weewonders.com or call 504 433-2428 to register.
Out and About:
St. Martin’s is presenting a seminar by Matthew L. Davidson, Ph.D., on Tuesday, March 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Solomon Theater on St. Martin’s campus. Dr. Davidson’s topic is Work Hard. Do Your Best. Do the Right Thing: Practical Strategies for Successful Parenting, focusing on practical parenting strategies for developing performance character and moral character in youth.
Thank You:
. to Alice Atkinson and Meliss Saltaformaggio, our P.E. teachers, for organizing yesterday’s Jump Rope for the Heart. The Preschool and Lower School girls thoroughly enjoyed this fun and healthy activity. We should all have so much energy!
. to Sr. Judy Gomila, of the Holy Childhood Association, who visited yesterday and spoke to the girls about her work with mission children throughout the world. Sr. Judy has a special gift for entertaining our students with stories and information about children of other lands, and at the same time educating them about the importance of supporting the foreign missions.
