Childpost

April 4, 2008

"Let us respect childhood; let us honor the soul of that small creature of God who can already make choices of the best if we take the time to awaken her reason and make her use her judgment. . I am overwhelmed with love in thinking that this is the mission of the Society."
                                                                                                            -St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, RSCJ

Family Congé News:

Enclosed with this Childpost is a booklet outlining everything you need to know regarding the Family Congé.  Monica Gele, Director of Special Events, says things are shaping up for this big event scheduled for Sunday, April 20, but there is a need for a number of items.  If you can help, please bring the items to the Nims Center.

· 2-Liter Soft Drinks

We ask each family to turn in two 2-liter drinks by Wednesday, April 16.

· Empty Eggshells & Cartons

Please save (and RINSE OUT) your empty eggshells.  We also need the empty cartons.  We never have enough for this popular booth!

· Stuffed Animals

Clean out those toy chests and closets!  Please donate any like-new stuffed animals for the stuffed animal booth.

· Heart Mart Items

Do you know anyone who has a business that would be willing to donate any items to our Heart Mart store?  It can be anything from shampoo, household samples, perfume, pencils, magnets, toothpaste, toothbrushes, note pads, pens, etc!

· Used Books, DVDs & CDs

Please donate any like-new books, DVDs & CDs for both adults and children.

· Parade of Prizes & Flea Market Items

Do you have duplicate Christmas or birthday gifts?  Please consider donating them.  The Parade of Prizes Booth needs NEW, UNUSED items.  Also needed are "White Elephant" items (NO CLOTHING PLEASE) for a new booth, Flea Market.  No donation is too small or large.

· My Favorite Pet Booth

Here is how to participate:

1.  Any type of pet will qualify: dog, cat, bird, fish, snake, hamster, etc.

2.  Send in a picture of your favorite pet(s) in to your teacher.  The picture should be:

                         a.  4 x 6 in size (but can be bigger if that is all you have available)

b.  Have your full name, your pet's name, your grade and your homeroom teacher's name written in ink on the back of the photo.

3.  The picture will not be returned.

4.  One photo per pet is allowed.  But each student can enter as many pets as they want.

5.  Photos must be given to your homeroom teacher on or before April 16th.

Your pet's picture will be on display at the Congé at the My Favorite Pet Booth and event calendar will be sent to all parents before the conclusion of this year.

School Shoes for 2008-2009:

For those who must buy school shoes before this year is over, we want to let you know that the uniform shoes will remain the same next year.  If your daughter is going into PK next year and needs new shoes now, feel free to buy the navy PK shoes.  Don't forget, Ponseti Shoes and Haase's offer a 10% discount to all Sacred Heart students.

            For Little Hearts:

The uniform shoe is the Keds red "MJ Katie."

For Preschool:

The uniform shoe is the navy Keds "School Days" in leather.  If your daughter's foot is too small for the "School Days" shoe, a Keds navy canvas "Champion" or "Karen" is acceptable.

The Environmental Club:

Sacred Heart's Middle and Upper School Environmental Clubs have been working hard throughout the 2007-2008 school year to promote recycling around the Sacred Heart campus. We realize the difficulty in recycling at home because of the lack of curb-side recycling. So, we want to encourage all families to collect the recyclable materials used in their household and drop them off at the Recycling Events that will be coming up in the following months.  Also, they hope that each family will take the time to fill out this survey and send it to the City of New Orleans Department of Sanitation in hopes of making a change in our city's recycling program.    All the information you need is in the following link:

http://www.cityofno.com/Portals/Sanitation/Resources/2008_03_Survey.pdf .

ASH Summer Camp:

If you are interested in sending your daughter to our summer camp, please complete and return your registration form.  Sessions are filling up!

What's Old Is New Again:

At Parent Night last August Dr. Burns spoke of our return to a tradition in Sacred Heart education of identification of some of the divisions and grades in the school.  During the course of this year we have been transitioning back to referring to the Lower School as "Primary School" and referring to the grades as "First Primary," "Second Primary," "Third Primary" and "Fourth Primary."  Next school year we will be using these traditional names.  The Middle School will be referred to as "Preparatory School" (or Preps) and the Upper School as "Academics."  This is another example of recreating some of the wonderful traditions of a Sacred Heart education.  Little Hearts and Preschool, along with Toddlers, Nursery, Prekindergarten, and Kindergarten will retain their current names.

Out and About:

The French Quarter Festival is scheduled for April 11-13, and is a wonderful opportunity to expose your daughter to the sights and sounds of our historic city.  As most of you know, there is always great food and terrific local entertainment.  This year, ASH faculty and older students will join with the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau to discover the Treasures of the French Quarter through an art activity designed by Mrs. Brandao, our PS/LS art teacher.    Our table will be in the Children's Headquarters located in Dutch Alley which is adjacent to the Moonwalk between Dumaine and St. Philip streets.   We'd love to have some friendly faces pay us a visit!
