January 2008

Happy New Year!  We hope that your holidays were filled with the joy that comes from spending time with family and friends, the true treasures of Christmas.  On January 6, we will celebrate the Epiphany, the day the three kings saw the Christ Child and offered their gifts.  We have been speaking to the girls about slowing down and enjoying the many things that we do for others.  We are often too busy to stop and savor the moment.  May 2008 be the year for all of us to stop and enjoy the many opportunities and blessings that the Lord has given to us.

Many thanks.

.to Jodi McWilliams for a fabulous Christmas concert.  The angelic voices of the primary girls filled the Nims with the Christmas spirit.  Congratulations Jodi!

.to Machelle Payne and Kelley Abbott for orchestrating the assembly and take down of the Christmas decorations on the Mater Campus.

. to the parents and room mothers who came into the classrooms to work on Christmas activities and projects.  The girls loved spending time with you, and the teachers truly appreciated your help.

.to all of the parents who prepared a Christmas basket for the Christmas mass.  Our basket mass was beautiful with the aisles lined with baskets and the Nims Fine Arts Center decorated with festive decorations.  The student body gathered to welcome the Christ Child and it was a beautiful start to the Christmas holidays.  Thank you for your generosity.

Welcome

We are happy to welcome Celina Morrison and her family to the third primary class.  The Morrison family has recently moved to New Orleans and we are thrilled that they are joining our ASH family.

Applause

Has your daughter participated in a play, won a sports tournament, or received a special award?  Please email Laurie Friedrichs at lfriedrichs@ashrosary.org if you have anything to contribute to the applause section of the newsletter.

Goal Two (deep respect for intellectual values):

Our faculty and administrators will be participating in many faculty development programs this semester.  We will have teachers attending conferences on learning styles, brain research, leadership programs, Rubicon Atlas curriculum mapping training and textbook caravans.  The faculty and administration will be sharing many of the innovative ideas at our faculty meetings so we can all benefit from their professional development opportunities.   Kudos to the faculty for expanding their knowledge and taking advantage of some great opportunities to learn new things.

Manner of the Month

During January we ask each student and teacher to "let her light shine."  Now that Jesus, the Light of the World, has arrived, it is up to each of us to live as He taught by His example.  We can do this in so many ways—by being kind to others, by sharing, by taking turns, by following directions, by first-time listening.  "Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." (Matthew 5:16)

LSU in the BCS Title Game: Change of Schedule!

Monday is the big day when LSU plays for the national football championship!  In support of the event, your daughter may wear purple/gold free dress (Ohio State fans may wear scarlet and gray), but please make sure that she wears tennis shoes (or her school shoes) with socks.

On Tuesday, January 8, we will have a late arrival with classes resuming at 10:00 a.m.  Morning drop-off begins at 9:30 when the building opens.  Go Tigers!

ASH Recycling Activities

The Middle School newspaper recycling program will continue through the second semester.  Please take your papers to the Rosary Campus on the following Fridays: January 11, February 1, March 7, April 4, May 2 and May 23.

Dining Hall

Before the holidays many people received bills from the dining hall for their child’s account balances.  We have signed an agreement with the Archdiocese that the girls may not charge lunch on a zero balance account.  Unfortunately, this policy has not been enforced which left the dining hall staff with over $900 worth of overdue fees.  If your daughter receives a hot lunch please make sure that you have either pre-paid for the year or are regularly sending money to cover these charges.  You can send a check or cash in at anytime to replenish the dining hall funds.  Please note that in LS the girls are allowed to go through the lunch line a second time to receive seconds on items other than dessert.  However, they are charged for the seconds on their account so please make sure your daughter has sufficient funds to cover this.  If you have any questions, please call the cafeteria manager Ms. Andrea at 891-1926.

PLUS Reminder

Due to Mardi Gras parades we will not have PLUS on Friday, January 25th and Wednesday, January 30th through Friday, February 1st.  The Mater Campus will close at 4:00 on these days.  Please note that Monday and Tuesday are rescheduling days for the weekend parades.  If there are no parades on these days we will have regular PLUS.  If parades are rescheduled to Monday or Tuesday we will not have PLUS and the building will close at 4:00.

Family Mass

Our Light of the World Family Mass will take place on Friday, January 25, at 8:00 a.m. in the Nims Center.  The doors to the Nims will open at 7:45 a.m. We encourage you and your family to join your daughter for this celebration.  The girls will wear their uniforms, but may wear red, orange, or white bows or headbands.

SchoolReach Telephone Service

SchoolReach is a service that we are using to notify parents via their home phone, cell phone and work phone.  Yesterday we activated this service to notify you of the late start on Tuesday.  If you did not receive a call from SchoolReach, please notify Liz Manthey at

269-1207.  In addition to this call, an email was sent from ashrosary.org.  If you did not receive the email, please go to our website (www.ashrosary.org) and click on mailing list to check your registration.  If you have any difficulty registering, please call Laurie Friedrichs at 269-6500.

Looking Ahead to Carnival Time

The Fathers’ Club is sponsoring a picnic at 11:00 on Saturday, February 2 on the Mater Campus.  Bring the family (a picnic blanket or some ballpark chairs) and plan to enjoy a tailgate buffet as you watch the Saturday Uptown parades.

The Lower School students are the "official spectators" for the MS Krewe of Myths parade on Thursday,January 31st, the PS Krewe of Smocks on Friday, February 1st , and the US Krewe of Fluff on Friday afternoon.  We will have free dress on Friday and will have activities for the LS girls during the day.  Please have your daughter bring a bag to school for the throws that she will catch on Thursday and Friday.  Have a safe and happy Mardi Gras!

After Mardi Gras we will be collecting Mardi Gras beads for the Strive Center.  After you parade all season, save a bag of beads for the Strive Center, "a private non-profit organization that provides employment and vocational training to men and women with mental retardation giving them opportunities to earn income and to reach their potential as members of the community."  We will collect beads from February 11th through 15th.
