What is the good of teaching various subjects, of wasting time in learning them, if at the same time we cannot teach children the words of life and touch their hearts and their consciences?

-St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, RSCJ

This morning our whole school gathered for a liturgy honoring the life of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, RSCJ, who founded the Society of the Sacred Heart.  In 1800, at the age of 20, she and her companions professed their first vows as members of new community of religious women.  Her vision was to provide young girls with the same educational advantages as boys, making sure to center that education on the love of Jesus.  Our U.S. schools, and the schools of the Sacred Heart throughout the world, are the result of the seeds planted by Madeleine Sophie those many years ago.

Congé Success!

Last Sunday's Family Congé was just terrific!  Thanks so much to all the families who were able to participate in so many ways.  The weather was perfect, and the day was filled with Sacred Heart spirit and camaraderie.  We congratulate the Congé co-chairs-Tricia Busha, Mary Belle Connick, Ingrid Garvey, Michele King, Edie Pitt, and Louise Zimmermann (all LH/PS/LS moms!)-as well as Monica Gele and the Development Office staff for their hard work and enthusiasm.

Kindergarten/1st Primary Transition:

We hope that all Kindergarten parents will join Mrs. Higginbotham and Mrs. Friedrichs at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, to learn about the Primary School program.  It's hard to believe that your girls will be soon be "graduating."  We're confident that they are ready, but are you?!

Kindergarten Spring Fling:

The Kindergarten will present Spring Fling next Wednesday, April 30, beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Your daughter should wear her white dress and black or white party shoes with socks.  A pastel ribbon or headband is also acceptable.  Please pack her uniform in her book bag if she will stay for the afternoon, but if she leaves with you after the performance she should not return to school.

Spring Fling is a wonderful celebration of song and language arts, and is a culmination of many of the activities and skills the girls have learned this year.  We are so proud of the girls and their efforts.  We remind you that this is an adult-only event (no young siblings, please).  Grandparents are welcome to attend.  Please plan to join us for a short reception following the performances.

ASH Summer Camp:

Don't forget about the ASH Camp.  Mrs. Salta and her staff are gearing up for a summer of fun.  Registration forms are available at the front desk, but sessions are filling up.

More Summer Activities:

· Marilyn Levin's R.E.A.D. (Reading Enrichment and Development) program has several sessions

scheduled during the summer.  Brochures are available at the front desk or you can go to

Marilyn's website, www.readnola.com.  There are several types of classes:

Literacy Beginnings    2-3 ½ years      child and parent attend together

3-5 years          child and parent attend together

Early Literacy             4-6 years          child attends alone

Creative Writing         6-8 years          child attends alone

· Crane Rehab's Write From the Start multisensory handwriting program also has summer sessions for students who need to boost their fine motor skills.  Brochures are available at the front desk or you may call Crane Rehab, 828-7696.

Professional Education:

Our teachers continue to take advantage of many professional development opportunities and to use what they have learned in your daughter's classroom, as well as to share their experiences with their colleagues.  In recent weeks teachers, have attended the following conferences: National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; International Reading Association; American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; Learning and the Brain; American Library Association; Rubicon Atlas Curriculum Mapping; and the Kagan Institute.
