Every one of us has in him a continent of undiscovered character.Blessed is he who acts the Columbus to his own soul.
~Author Unknown

Please remember: Monday, October 13, is the Fall Holiday. There is no school.

Welcome:

Aaliya Oro has joined the Toddler class of Mrs. Alpaugh and Mrs. Briede. We are happy to welcome Aaliya and her mother, Brittany Santa Marina.

Don't Forget About Tuesday Tours and Open House:

Please tell your family, friends, and co-workers about Sacred Heart. On the Mater Campus (for Toddlers-4th Primary), Tuesday Tours are scheduled for October 14 and 28 November 11 at 8:30. Open House is scheduled for October 22 at 4:30.

What is "First Time Listening?"

On any given day your daughter may come home saying "I was a wonderful first-time listener," or "I had trouble being a first-time listener." First-time listening is a phrase we use to encourage courteous and cooperative behavior. We count on each girl to respond to a teacher's request the first time her name is called or a direction is given. It can be difficult at first, but the girls learn that this is the expected behavior and take action accordingly. We ask you to help us at home by using this same language and by following through with your directives. You will be amazed by what your daughter can do!

Book Drive and Coin Drop:

Please remember our additional October service projects:

We ask each child to donate one new book (hard back or paper back) to give to a child at Holy Family School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This school was affected by last summer's flooding. Please send to school by October 17. Your daughter will be making a book mark to go into her book on Monday, October 20.

Please send in coins for the Coin Drop. The school will match all funds collected. We will send this amount to our Sacred Heart school in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Grand Coteau, the home to many students and faculty after Hurricane Katrina, sustained significant damage after Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

Mater's Feast:

We will celebrate Mater's Feast on Monday, October 20. Students in PK-grade 12 will attend Mass in the Nims Center. You are welcome to join us for Mass. Your daughter will sit with her class, so we ask that you find a place in the back of the Nims or in the balcony. Little Hearts students will have a special celebration in the Chapel on the Mater Campus.

Each PK and K student must wear her white uniform on Mater's Feast. She should wear black or white party shoes with socks. A pink or white headband or ribbon is also permitted. If your daughter does not have her white uniform dress, please contact Toots Villeré, tvillere@ashrosary.org.

Important note: Your daughter should have her regular uniform, shoes, and socks in her book bag so that she can change after we return from the liturgy.

Mater Campus Father-Daughter Breakfast!

The Fathers' Club Father-Daughter Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for Saturday, October 25, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Our girls love this morning, and what a great way for dads to spend some time with the other girl(s) in their lives! The Fathers' Club provides breakfast, inflatables for outside play, and a musical performance in the Nims. Please RSVP to Paul Lawless (nolawless@cox.net) if you are planning to attend. The caterer needs an accurate head count.

Looking Ahead:

We are happy to report that Leonard Sax, psychologist and family physician, has accepted our invitation to visit Sacred Heart in January. Dr. Sax is the author of Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know About the Emerging Science of Sex Differences. He will give an evening lecture for parents on Thursday, January 29, and provide an in-service workshop for faculty on Friday, January 30. There will be no school for students on Friday, January 30.

Thank You.

To all who sent in Hearty Snacks on Wednesday. We were able to send 120 bags to The Good Shepherd School! We are very grateful for your generosity.

To all who were able to attend the Book Fair Boutique this week. Chairs Ashley Bohn and Leslie Tufaro (Book Fair) and Colleen Barber and Mary Belle Connick (Boutique) reported great sales! A special thanks to the many volunteers who helped keep the Nims in tip-top shape throughout the week. We appreciate your support of this all-school event.

To the many parents who sent in Faculty Appreciation treats last week: Tina Andrews, Kelly Barnes, Maria Bohorques, Elizabeth Derbes, Melanie Ditta, Sanchita Halder, Dana Hammer, Erin Hubert, Cindy Jackson, Janette Kalifeh, Alana Keller, Veronica Koclanes, Hilary Landry, Marcelle Landry, Jessica Macaluso, Sharon Major, Jennifer Mann, Michelle Mannino, Suellen Maureau, Lisa Musso, Colleen Nusloch, Meredith Pinkerton, Edie Pitt, Traci Schlosser, Marzel Stafford, Jenny Sundell, Gia Toogood, Nicole Waguespack, Celia Ward, Michelle Wise, Lisa Yarborough, and Louise Zimmermann.
