Academy of the Sacred Heart
Childpost
May 23, 2008
Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, or to your next door neighbor. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting.
-Mother Teresa of Calcutta
There are many wonderful schools in New Orleans-schools that provide excellent programs and offer children opportunities to grow and learn in safe, nurturing environments. But as this school year comes to a close, we reflect on what we feel makes Sacred Heart such a special place. Always we return to fact that our program, our philosophy, our life lived-as Sacred Heart educator Janet Erskine Stuart wrote-centers on the Goals of Sacred Heart education-an education focusing on faith development, academic progress, social awareness, community-building, and personal growth. The Goals-intertwined as they are and must be-are what set us apart. As we say good-bye to each student-each child of the Sacred Heart-we marvel at what she has learned and how she has grown, and we realize how fortunate we have been to have shared this year with her. It's been a great year! Have a safe, restful, and happy summer!
Ending 2007-2008
Preschool Field Day:
On Monday, May 26, the Preschool girls will enjoy Field Day on the Mater Campus. Ms. Atkinson, our Preschool P.E. teacher, has organized a morning of activities and cooperative games for the girls. The teachers and Fourth Primary students will be helping. Your daughter should wear her ASH t-shirt/shorts and tennis shoes with socks. Don't forget to apply sunscreen before she arrives at school!
Fourth Primary Pixie Doll Raffle and Bake Sale:
"When is the Pixie Doll raffle?" is a frequent question among the students during these final days, but "What is a Pixie Doll?" is probably the bigger question for parents of Preschool girls. Pixie Dolls are handcrafted by the Fourth Primary students. They are made of used, found, and reclaimed pieces of fabric or clothing. Each doll has a story, and each is loved. The Fourth Primary girls raffle some of these special creations at the end of each school year. Monies raised go to support the charities they have chosen. This year's raffle and their last bake sale are scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, and we ask that you please send a few quarters in a zip lock bag so that your daughter can buy a treat or take a chance on winning a doll with whom she "truly identifies." Your daughter will submit her entry into an envelope and one winner is drawn for each doll.
Preschool Luau:
Next Wednesday, May 28, we will close out the school year with luau for the Preschool and Lower School students. Your PK and K daughter should wear a swimsuit under her ASH t-shirt/shorts and flip-flops (or water shoes). Please make sure to send a beach towel and to apply sunscreen at home.
You are invited to join in the fun and to say goodbye to your daughter's teacher beginning at 11:00 a.m. There will be no carpool line on this day. Dismissal is from the luau. Please make sure to check out with your daughter's teacher and to check the classroom for any personal items before you leave.
Dining Hall News:
Please see the enclosed letter from School Food & Nutrition Services concerning this year's school lunch program. If you have a balance due to the Dining Hall, we ask that you take care of your bill immediately. Payments must be in cash. If you have questions, please contact the Dining Hall Manager, Andrea Veal (891-2926).
Kindergarten Spring Fling Video:
If you ordered a Spring Fling video, it should be in your Childpost envelope today. If there is a technical problem (e.g., no sound), please return the video to the office, but be sure your name is on it and the problem is noted.
Nap Mats:
Nap mats are available in Mrs. Villere's office until Wednesday, May 28. After that, they will be taken to the Bookstore on the Rosary Campus and will be available there when we return to school in August. The cost is $25.
Faith and Fun:
Living our faith is not something limited to religion classes and school days. We've enclosed an activity poster for your family to use this summer. We ask you to post it in a prominent place in your home and to work on some of the activities. Faith is caught-not taught!
Summer Reading:
Nothing can be more fun on a hot, lazy summer afternoon than to cool off with a good book. Our librarians have prepared a list of titles to help you find just the right one. Reading aloud to your daughter affords you an opportunity to enjoy each other's company and to share ideas, while providing books for your daughter to independently "read" allows her to experience the joy of looking at pictures, turning pages, and creating her own stories. Let the reading begin!
Preschool Closing Days:
Last day of School for Little Hearts (Toddlers/Nursery) Friday, May 23
Last day for Extended Day and ASH PLUS Friday, May 23
Noon Dismissal Days for Preschool (PK/K) M-T-W-May 26, 27, 28
Last day of School for Preschool (PK/K) Wednesday, May 28
Final Reports Mailed:
· Little Hearts students will receive a Special Communication the second week of June.
· Preschool students will receive a Progress Report the second week of June.
Manners for the Month:
We've worked hard this year to help your daughter recognize proper conduct and to use good manners with her classmates, teachers, and other adults. But in order to become a habit, these skills must be reinforced at home. Repetition is the key, and is the primary reason we re-introduce and stress the same manners each year. We want your daughter to be poised and confident in every type of social situation. Please help us. A good family "homework" assignment would be to encourage these behaviors throughout the summer. Here's a list of what we covered in 2007-2008:
September Make eye contact and say "Good Morning"
October Use "please" and "thank you"
November Practice "first-time listening"
December Practice patience
January "Let your light shine"
February Smile-a loving heart shows love by smiling
March Say "excuse me" and "I'm sorry"
April Practice good table manners
May Use kind words
Thank You.
