February 2008

This week we are celebrating Catholic Schools Week in the Archdiocese of New Orleans and across the U.S.  Dr. Karen M. Ristau, president of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), said, "Catholic Schools do good work all year around.  In addition to learning reading, writing and arithmetic, students also learn responsibility—and how to become persons of character and integrity."  We are fortunate to be part of a large network of  Catholic elementary and high schools who are dedicated to providing value-based education for the children in New Orleans, and we thank you for your commitment to us— and to your daughters.

The Light of the World Family Mass was such a nice event.  There is nothing more beautiful than seeing our families praying together.  We know it’s sometimes a struggle to get to Mass or to your church (much less concentrate!) with young children in tow, but by doing so you are making it a priority and demonstrating to them how much your faith means to you.  We know that children learn by example and model the behaviors they see at home.  Your example serves as a light for your children, guiding them along their way.

Many Thanks.

.to the many hands that helped decorate and undecorate the Mater Campus for Christmas.  We are grateful to Donielle Arata, Kris Babin, Shelley Barreca, Andrée Batt,  Claudette Bienvenu, Crystal Bonura, Jeanne Bourgeois, Laura Brown, Elizabeth Brinson, Tricia Busha, Elizabeth Casey, Staci Champlin, Jeannie D'Angelo, Lorie DeMarcay, Cecilia Domangue, Beth Edwards, Myra Gill, Cristina Guarisco, Peggy Gundlach, Julie Habetz, Jennifer Hardie, Kellie Hardie, Patricia Hebert, Erin Hubert, Anne Hughs, Shelby Hunter, Coco Johnson, Janette Kalifeh, Suzanne Kling, Veronica Koclanes, Marcelle Landry, Becky Leach, Elizabeth LeBlanc, Erin Luetkemeier, Michelle Mannino, Suellen Maureau, Deani Milano, Jennifer Miller, Stephanie Moore, Shelley Poore, Doran Roemershauser, Colleen Schenck, Monique Toso, Jenny Triche, Laura Vickery, Michelle Wise, and Louise Zimmermann.  Another special thank you to Kelley Abbott and Machelle Payne for chairing this Mothers’ Club committee.

...to the moms who have served as tour guides for this year’s admissions events.  We are grateful to Kelley Abbott, Stephanie Capella, Shirley Charbonnet, Lorie DeMarcay, Beth Edwards, Yvette Endom, Denise Galloway, Vivienne Hayne, Sarah Hoffman, Coco Johnson, Renee Keiser, Suzanne Kling, Veronica Koclanes, Barbie Landry, Elizabeth LeBlanc, Evelyn Liberto, Erin Luetkemeier, Stephanie Martin, Machelle Payne, Margaret Pelitere, Doran Roemershauser, and Nancy Walshe for meeting prospective parents and hosting tours of the Mater Campus.

.to all who sent in Hearty Snacks in January.  We were able to collect more than 127 bags for The Good Shepherd School.  The students and faculty were very appreciative of our generosity.

. to all who supported the Middle School recycling efforts by dropping off newspapers at the Rosary Campus last month.  The fourth primary collected the most papers.  This group is hard to beat.  The next collection will be this Friday, February 1st.

Manner of the Month

The manner of the month for February is SMILE-a loving heart shows love by smiling.  A smile is a curve that sets things straight.

Super Support for a Native Son

In celebration of New Orleans native Eli Manning’s participation in Super Bowl XLII, we will have free dress on Thursday, January 31.  Your daughter may wear New York Giants colors—royal blue, red, gray, or white.  Eli is the proud uncle of May Manning, one of our PK girls.

It’s Carnival Time

The Lower School students are the "official spectators" for the MS Krewe of Myths parade on Thursday, January 31st the PS Krewe of Smocks on Friday, February 1st, and the US Krewe of Fluff on Friday afternoon.  We will have free dress on Friday and will have activities for the LS girls during the day.  Please have your daughter bring a bag to school for the throws that she will catch on Thursday and Friday.  Have a safe and happy Mardi Gras!

The Fathers’ Club is sponsoring a picnic from 11-2 on Saturday, February 2 on the Mater Campus.  Bring the family (a picnic blanket or some ballpark chairs) and plan to enjoy a tailgate buffet as you watch the Saturday Uptown parades.

After Mardi Gras we will be collecting Mardi Gras beads for the Strive Center.  After you parade all season, save a bag of beads for the Strive Center, "a private non-profit organization that provides employment and vocational training to men and women with mental retardation giving them opportunities to earn income and to reach their potential as members of the community."  We will collect beads from February 26th through March 2nd.

February 14th

On February 14th we are inviting all of the daddies to bring their daughters to school between 8:00 and 8:30.  They will do a little Valentine’s Day project and have some bagels with their dads.  Daddies should be free to go to work between 8:30 and 9:00.

The fourth graders are hosting a bake sale on Thursday, February 14 during recess.  At the end of the school year the fourth grade will choose outreach programs that they would like to receive the money.
