Preparatory News

As we face the world of young people we appreciate their freshness and their vitality which directs us towards the future. We appreciate the values most important to them: solidarity, friendship and peace, their creativity and their ability to foster change. We also acknowledge that today perhaps the most vulnerable in our society are the young.

Staying Connected

We want you to stay abreast about everything that is happening at Sacred Heart. In addition to In The Middle, we have several other ways to keep you informed:

  • The school website, www.ashrosary.org., includes up-to-date calendars, lunch menus, and forms, as well as information about school policies, programs, and procedures. You must register on the website so you will receive important updates and information. In these days of instant access, we are finding that we are using technology more and more. We ask you to check the website often for information. During this hurricane season please check the site and "click" on the Hurricane Preparedness link to keep abreast of school happenings.
  • Email is another way to keep in touch with teachers and other families about school matters.
  • The school directory, which went home on August 22nd. If you have a change or correction, please send a dated, written note to school. An addendum is emailed to all parents every month.
  • Phone calls and face-to-face conversations are always welcome! We never want to give up the human touch.

Thanks to.

...the many families who joined us for Back to School Night. It was wonderful to see so many parents!

...Lisa Amenta and Tisha Rueb for organizing the delicious refreshments from Whole Foods grocery store for Back to School Night. Everything was yummy!

...our Prep Student Council members for their helpful guidance around the 3rd floor during Back to School Night

Missing Forms

We still have students with missing forms. If you are uncertain if you returned all of your daughter's paperwork, please check in with Mrs. O'Keefe.

School Pictures

School pictures were taken the first day of school. If your daughter was absent, re-takes and class pictures are scheduled for the end of September.

Mass of the Holy Spirit

Friday, August 29, students from PK-12 will participate in the Mass of the Holy Spirit in the Nims Center. This annual event is a way for our school community to come together to ask God's blessings on our work and play during the school year, and helps us to live out Goals I (faith) and IV (building of community) of Sacred Heart education. The 29th is a "dress uniform" day which includes a white polo shirt and the v-neck ASH sweater.

Wrapping Paper Orders

Each year the junior class sells wrapping paper to generate the funds needed to support their junior/senior class activities (junior/senior prom, ring dance, etc). In addition, a portion of the total goes to one of the divisions of the school. The homeroom teachers distributed order forms on the first day of school. The procedure has changed this year, and you are asked to go online to place your order. If you would like to participate, we ask you to follow the instructions, and return payment to school by the Friday, September 11, deadline.

Children's Hospital Classes

There will be several Fall classes offered through the hospital which may be of interest to you. The courses include Living with Your Teenager, Finding Your Forgotten Self, Parenting Pre-teens, and Growing Up For Girls. Please check the attachment for more information.

Paint the City Pink

In 2007, the Academy of the Sacred Heart collaborated with Cabrini High School to "Paint the Gym PINK for the CURE" and transformed a regular season volleyball match into a huge event promoting breast cancer awareness. Together we raised $17,000 to benefit the New Orleans affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the CURE. This year, "Volleyball for the CURE", a new match-up between the Academy of the Sacred Heart and Newman on Thursday, September 18th will build on our success from 2007.Once again, the volleyball match is just part of our vision to raise breast cancer awareness. Please see all the forms in this month's Heartline.

The Storm

As the Gulf coastal region prepares for Gustav, we are developing plans for our school community. We are praying that all of our planning will be a test run and that we can all return happily and safely to school on Tuesday. On the side of caution I am asking that the Prep students take home all of their books and materials this weekend. The ashrosary.org website and individual email addresses will be our means of communication if we cannot return on Tuesday. Please do not hesitate to email me or any other faculty member if you have questions or concerns.
