Sacred Heart Welcomes New Athletic Director
Sarah Kirkwood Reiss

The Academy of the Sacred Heart has appointed Sarah Kirkwood Reiss to be the new Director of Athletics.   Reiss comes to Sacred Heart from The Spence School in Manhattan where she served as the Associate Athletic Director and Varsity Volleyball Head Coach. Prior to her tenure at The Spence School, she was the Associate Head Coach at New York University.

A 2008 graduate of the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in cognitive science and a pre-medicine concentration in neuroscience, Reiss had one of the most outstanding volleyball careers in UVA history as outside hitter. She established team records for career kills, kills per set and service aces, and graduated ranked sixth all-time in hitting percentage and eighth in digs.

During her time at UVA, Reiss racked up numerous accolades. She was an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-American as a sophomore and senior, as well as a two-time ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American – including receiving First Team honors her junior year.

A two-year team captain, Reiss was also selected All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) each of her four years and was named the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2004. She was a three-time Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Player of the Year.

Following graduation, Reiss continued her career professionally. She had stints in the Association of Volleyball Professionals in Los Angeles, ICOT Volleyball 2002 in Italy and Valencianas Volleyball in Puerto Rico.

Reiss earned her Master of Science degree in Commerce with a concentration in Financial Services from Virginia in 2010. She went on to earn her law degree, concentrating in Intellectual Property, from Cardozo School of Law.

A Tampa native, Sarah recently relocated to New Orleans from Manhattan with her husband Crutcher Reiss. Sarah and Crutcher met during their time at the University of Virginia, where Crutcher was playing on the Varsity football team. Besides her passion for mentoring and educating young people, Sarah also loves animals (especially her rescue pup Penny Lane) and is very active in the New Orleans Catahoula Rescue Group.

Sarah recently commented about her new role at Sacred Heart. “I am very excited and honored to join the Sacred Heart community.  I would like to thank Sr. Melanie Guste, RSCJ, the search committee, and the Board of Trustees for considering me for this role.  I feel privileged that I will be working for an institution that believes athletics can have a powerful impact on the education and character of the students. Sacred Heart has a strong history of excellence in athletics, and as Athletic Director, I look forward to working with the students, coaches, and staff to build on these traditions and values.”
