Sacred Heart Partners with Recycle Dat to Support Mardi Gras Sustainability

During Mardi Gras this year, the Academy of the Sacred Heart partnered with Grounds Krewe’s Recycle Dat initiative to help make Carnival celebrations more sustainable along the St. Charles parade route.

As part of the citywide effort, eight on-route recycling hubs were placed along Napoleon Avenue and St. Charles Avenue during peak parade weekends. These hubs gave parade-goers convenient places to recycle aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles, and unwanted throws during the Muses parade and the daytime parades throughout both weekends.

The results were impressive. Volunteers helped divert thousands of pounds of materials from landfills, including:

  • 4,868 pounds of aluminum
  • 1,351 pounds of plastic
  • 3,840 pounds of glass
  • 5,944 pounds of beads and throws

Sacred Heart proudly hosted one of the Recycle Dat stations near the Father’s Club trailer, providing an easy and convenient way for parade-goers to recycle along the route.

This partnership reflects Sacred Heart’s commitment to Goal III of Sacred Heart education: a social awareness which impels to action. By supporting initiatives that care for our shared environment and community, Sacred Heart families and volunteers helped ensure that the joy of Carnival can be celebrated responsibly.

With more krewes creating throws made from recyclable packaging and sustainable materials than ever before, the variety of items collected this year highlighted how Mardi Gras traditions can continue to evolve in ways that benefit the city we love.

Through partnerships like Recycle Dat and Grounds Krewe, Sacred Heart is proud to be part of a community working together to keep New Orleans vibrant, joyful, and sustainable.

Sustainable Hearts

Fifth and sixth grade advisories created parade signs and tracked sustainable throws caught during the first parade weekend after learning about Mardi Gras waste and recycling solutions in assemblies.
