Sacred Heart Softball Delivers Walk-Off Drama and Big Offensive Performances

Sacred Heart 7/8 Hold Off Newman 7/8 For Victory

Sacred Heart 7/8 built a 4-run lead in the first inning and then held off Newman charge for a 6-5 victory on Tuesday. The Cardinals got on the board in the top of the first inning after Josie S ’30 singled, scoring two runs, Ann Frances H ’30 doubled, scoring one run, and Sarah S ’32 singled, scoring one run. Newman tied the game at 4 in the bottom of a tense first inning on a series of walks issued on very close calls. Newman very well may have gone ahead in that inning had it not been for superstar defensive play by Sydney S ’30 in Left Field. The 8th grader made a spectacular throw to 3rd base to throw out Newman’s fastest base runner while she was trying to gain the extra base on a big outfield hit. Sacred Heart then took the lead, 6-4, in the top of the second thanks to clutch doubles by Rollins B ’30, and Adelle R ’30. Lane C ’30 earned the win for Sacred Heart. The hurler went the distance giving up only two hits and four runs in the 4-inning complete game effort, striking out three and walking five. Rollins led Sacred Heart with two hits in two at bats. Adelle, Josie, Rollins, and Sarah each drove in one run for Sacred Heart. In what was their finest fielding effort, the Cardinals defense did not commit a single error in the field!
