Cardinal Tennis Opens Season 3–0

The Sacred Heart varsity tennis team kicked off their season with three solid team wins last week!  The Cardinals faced Haynes Academy, St. Mary’s Dominican High School and the McGehee School in this exciting first week of matches! 

On Monday, the team faced Haynes Academy.  All three doubles lines posted quick and decisive wins.  The pairings included: Charlotte Jenkins ’27 and Elise Scafidel ’28, Georgia Dazet ’29 and Laine Suhren ’29, and Lena Capitelli ’27 and Becca Mogabgab ’29.  Emmeline Singer ’26 battled for nearly two hours on first singles against a longtime rival, falling in the final tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-0, 6-10.  With a Haynes default on second singles, the Cardinal team finished the match victoriously with the score of 4-1.

On Tuesday, the Cardinals faced St. Mary’s Dominican High School and triumphed with a clean sweep of all 6 lines.  Emmeline Singer ’26 quickly shut out her opponent on first singles. Zoe McCall ’28 finished strong in second singles, winning 6-1, 6-1. Georgia Dazet ’29 and Laine Suhren ’29 were impressive in second doubles, finishing at 6-1, 6-3.  Becca Mogabgab ’29 and Elodie Scafidel ’26 were victorious on third doubles, closing at 6-1, 6-1.  Emerson Guste ’29 and Clyde Kolb ’28 played well together on fourth doubles, victorious with a score of 6-1, 6-0. With the crowd cheering for a complete sweep, Charlotte Jenkins ’27 and Elise Scafidel ’28 played tough on first doubles against seasoned opponents, winning the battle 6-2, 6-3. 

The Cardinals finished the week with a clean sweep of the McGehee School on Thursday, winning 5-0.  Emmeline Singer ’26 and the doubles team of Charlotte Jenkins ’27 and Elise Scafidel ’28 both posted shutouts on the first lines of singles and doubles. Georgia Dazet ’29 and Laine Suhren ’29 played great together on second doubles, winning 6-0, 6-3.  Ellie Brennan ’27 and Elodie Scafidel ’26 were strong partners on third doubles, finishing with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory.  Rounding out the match, Zoe McCall ’28 battled on second singles with the team cheering her on to earn the final victory, 7-5, 6-2. 

What an awesome start to the season!  The undefeated Cardinals will face Willow School  and Ursuline Academy next week.  Let’s keep the momentum rolling!  Go Cardinals!!
