Cardinals Open Track & Field Season with Strong Third-Place Finish

The first Track & Field meet of the season was a success, the potential for similar outcomes is very promising.  With only 12 athletes available for the meet and those entered in only half of the events, the Cardinals performed exceptionally well and finished 3rd as a team out of 7 scoring teams.

Mary Fitzpatrick '29 led the team off with a 3rd place finish and a new PR in the Discus with a toss of 67' 7" while Claire Donnelly '30 and Therese Carton '29 were jumping into the sand for the Long Jump competition.  Claire jumped herself to a new PR of 15' 5.5" for 3rd place and Therese went 13' 4" for her new PR also.

First on the track was 3rd place finisher, Jane Farnsworth '26 in the 100 Meter Hurdles with a nice season opening time of 17.45.  The all 8th grade squad in the 4 x 800 M Relay of Coco Varisco '30 (2:41.5), Claire Donnelly '30 (2:32.4 ~ PR), Bailey Reynaud '30 (2:37.8) & Angelina Wilmore ’30 (2:39.5) ran 10:31.2 for 2nd place.   The 2800 M Relay captured 1st Place with a time of 9:04 with Olivia Truxillo '30 in the 1200 M in 4:22.2 (PR), Campbell Smith '29 in the 400 M in 1:07.65 (PR), Coco Varisco '30 in 2:32.7 for the 800 Meter and Claire Donnelly '30 in 1:02.6 for the 400 Meter anchor leg.  Next up for the team was the 1600 Meter Run and the 3 athletes did very well again.  Finishing 2nd was Angelina Wilmore '30 in 5:44, 4th place was Bailey Reynaud '30 in 5:52 and coming back from her strong 1200 M leg, Olivia Truxillo '30 in a new PR of 5:55.

The last event was the 4 x 400 Meter Relay and although every one of the runners had already ran many events, the team gathered their strength for one more trip each around the track and did so in great fashion.  A 2nd place finish was their reward in a very nice time of 4:23.46.  Therese Carton '29 led off with a new PR time of 1:08.55 and handed off to Coco Varisco '30, who sprinted around and passed 2 teams with her time of 1:04.21 as she made the baton exchange to Campbell Smith '29 for the 3rd leg of the relay.  Campbell also passed another team with her time of 1:08.1 and handed to the anchor leg, Claire Donnelly '30, who closed out the last 400 meters in 1:02.6 and helped secure the teams 2nd place spot.

With that, the team's season opener was completed and the team left the field very excited for the possibilities that await them at the meets throughout this very short season.
