Middle School Additional Programs

Innovation Lab
In the Innovation and Design Lab, students prototype solutions to real-world issues through a process of empathy research, ideation, and design. Students utilize laser and 3-D printers, coding software, and robots to engineer models and experiment and test their solutions. Interdisciplinary projects provide students with opportunities to apply and synthesize concepts studied in STEAM subjects. Field trips and community partnerships are fostered to enhance students’ exploration and understanding of concepts.

Retreats/Field Trips/Off Campus Activities
Each grade participates in special on or off-campus activities, which relate to specific units of study, as well as foster understanding and appreciation for the community, environment, and the arts. In the fourth preparatory, students will participate in a mandatory community building, interdisciplinary experience (off-campus) which will appropriately culminate their Preparatory years and prepare the students for the transition to the Upper School.

Counseling
The goal of the Developmental Counseling Program is to aid students in meeting the challenges of modern life secure in the knowledge of themselves, the world around them, and the skills to formulate, articulate, and actualize their uniqueness. Trained counselors provide individual sessions for students of all ages. Classroom sessions are provided within the framework of the schedule for Middle School. Small groups may meet with a counselor to explore issues and problems important to each respective age group.

Human Sexuality
At specified times throughout the school year, Nurse Mindy Louviere, RN presents the anatomy and physiology portion of our Human Sexuality Program. The Academy of the Sacred Heart Human Sexuality Program is a shared responsibility among the Counseling, Religious Studies, Science, and Physical Education Departments. During this time, Nurse Mindy presents information on age-appropriate topics regarding human development and sexuality.

Our Human Sexuality program is one that is designed as an interdisciplinary curriculum involving the areas of religion, developmental counseling, science, and health. First prep learns about the female anatomy, the menstrual cycle, and basic hygiene. Second prep is introduced to the male anatomy. Third prep learns about the male and female anatomy along with conception and reproduction. Fourth prep learns about conception and life through childbirth. The moral, spiritual, emotional, and physical dimensions of sexuality are explored during this program.

Athletic & Theater Program
Athletic and theater after-school programs provide opportunity for students to participate in various community building teams and productions. Students in seventh and eighth grade are invited to tryout for junior varsity and varsity sports including basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Middle School sports teams in grades 5-8 include basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, softball, and volleyball.

Student Council
The Middle School student body elects officer and representatives for Student Council. Through retreats and regular meetings, students develop leadership skills and learn the practical application of the democratic policy. The students serve as liaisons between faculty and the student body by planning events and leading activities to build community and school spirit.

Additional Leadership Opportunities & After School Programs
Various additional leadership opportunities arise during the school year. These are announced at weekly assemblies. After-school programs vary depending on available offerings. Classes may include athletics, cooking, academic games, digital media, crafts or robotics.
