Design Thinking :: on the Mater Campus
Design Thinking is an integrated approach that offers students hands-on and creative ways to design, experiment, build and invent as they develop independence and self-regulation.
In the Mater Innovation Lab, students utilize design thinking to create an atmosphere of problem solving, creativity, effective communication and collaboration. "What if?" That's the curious mindset we instill in our students when applying this process. Take risks. Don't be afraid to try again. Only then can one learn to be a true problem solver.
While Design Thinking principles have been employed by professionals for decades, its potential impact with regard to 21st-century learning has recently risen to the forefront of educational research.

What is Design Thinking?
It's all about the process. Design Thinking is not a replacement for the innovative teaching that has been the foundation of Sacred Heart education for years. It is, in essence, a new layer. It provides students with a tool, a system with which they can manage their thinking and discover simplicity and innovation. Learn more >

Focus: A structured, iterative process for solving problems and designing innovative solutions.
Phases: Typically includes stages such as Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.
Key Characteristics: Deep user understanding through empathy, collaboration, iterative prototyping, and a focus on user needs to create effective solutions.
Relationship to Discovery Learning: Discovery is a component of design thinking, specifically within the empathize and define stages, where teams investigate and explore the problem space to gain deep insights into user needs.
