Cardinal Athletic News

Sacred Heart Soccer sets the tone for a powerful year ahead.

The Cardinal soccer team started off the season with a couple of nice wins and a draw against a huge Division III rival. The opening match  of the season against Hahnville was a tight game until Leah Varisco ’26  gave the Cardinals the win off of a late set piece from just outside the penalty area. H.L Bourgeois was next on the schedule in the Central Lafourche tournament where the Cardinals prevailed with a mercy rule 8-0 victory.

After a week of training during the Thanksgiving holidays, University Lab was on the schedule. On a cold and rainy night, the Cardinals went down a goal with about 15 minutes left in the game. However, they were not deterred and continued to fight. With about five minutes left in the match, Rosie Varisco ’28 beat two girls on the left wing and sent a cross into the box that Colette English ’27 tapped in for the equalizer.

The Willow School, as well as a district match vs. Patrick Taylor, is on the schedule for later this week.

The Cardinal’s JV soccer team also opened up Monday night against U-High and played them to the same result. After going down 1-0 early, they fought back and Emme C. ’31 found the back of the net with a great assist from Finley Buhler ’31. The JV team will also play another match this week vs Willow School following the varsity match.
