Make it a Shiny Summer at Sacred Heart

Dear Sacred Heart Families and Summer Camp Participants,

During these past weeks, the Academy of the Sacred Heart has been assessing the possibility of opening our Summer Camp Program across several dimensions: safety, quality, program, staffing, costs, supplies and service. Against all these measures, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of service and best practices. As educators, we explored every pathway to offer a camp experience that we can stand by and support for your children and family.

After exhaustive assessment of all possible scenarios, we have determined that our Camp will not open this summer. As you know, our options for summer activities have been shaped by the prevailing local and state guidance, as well as those of the CDC. In such an environment, our concerns for the campers’ experience and safety, as well as the safety of their families and our counselors have been at the forefront of our hearts and minds. Under the parameters we must operate within and the risks that we would need to mitigate, we do not feel that the experience would represent the standards of quality that our campers and their families are accustomed to and deserve.

This decision has been a difficult one for all of us, and we recognize that this will be a disappointment to all of you as well. Frankly, we are passionate about the value of camp for children, the need for children to have such times together, and the support it offers our families in the summer months. In particular, this summer was important to you and to all of us.

Our Summer Camp Directors Kris Blamphin and Meliss Saltaformaggio have shared with you, in their message below, more details about the closure of our camp for this summer. They have invested such care, planning and best practices into the plans for this year, and we all look forward to offering you the product of that effort in the future.

We hope that this email finds you and your family safe and healthy.

We pride ourselves on the variety of programs that we offer each summer at Sacred Heart, and the programming that we have developed over the years. However, the guidance from the CDC severely limits our ability to operate camp as we have done in the past. All field trips, all outside enrichment and water activities, and many more of the most popular aspects of our camp experience would be omitted from our offering. Once we walked through a day of camp in the eyes of our campers or their parents, we realized that the experience would fall short of our expectations and the goals we have for the campers. The decision to cancel summer camp was a difficult decision and one that we did not take lightly, and we share your disappointment.

We look forward to offering Sacred Heart Summer Camp in the summer of 2021.
