As a service project in celebration of Catholic Schools Week, Academy of the Sacred Heart students turned their Maker Space into a Glitter Den this holiday season.

Aiming to make an extra happy Mardi Gras season for the residents of Lambeth House in New Orleans, the students made door hangers.

Students used king cakes, masks, crowns, and fleur de lis shaped foam cut-outs and covered them in glitter, rhinestones, pompoms, and crepe paper. Ribbon was added to make the cut-outs into door hangers for residents’ doors.

Preschool through fourth grade discussed service to others as part of the Sacred Heart Goal 4: Commit themselves to the building of community as a Christian value. 

Small groups of students decorated door hangers and handmade cards for residents. Sacred Heart delivered the door hangers to Lambeth House residents and Academy of the Sacred Heart community members Elizabeth Furlong class of 1955 and Gail Guerra (granddaughter, Morgan Guerra class of 2017).

Students gave the following comments about the service and art project: 

"Going to the glitter den was fun and we got to be creative."

"I felt like a good person making something for someone else."

"We really liked sharing ideas and working with our friends."

"We got to add a lot of details to make them pretty: rhinestones, pom-poms, and glitter."

"The Academy of the Sacred Heart students were so excited to both do something for the community but also to use so much glitter and glue,” said Jennifer Adams, Instructional Coordinator/Administrative Assistant. “We actually depleted all of the glue reserve we had with this project and had to put in a new order. We aimed to deliver the door hangers soon after they were made, but with so much glue used, we had to wait an extra week for them to dry. The kids love glue and glitter!"
