Elevate NEXT Basketball: We will provide the fundamentals of the game while using fun and innovative teaching methods to ensure all skill levels stay engaged. We will make sure that we build on their skillsets while making sure they fall in love with the game of basketball. The program will focus on developing ball handling, shooting, defense, agility, and so much more. We want to help grow the game of basketball at Sacred Heart. Dr. Peter Gray, a developmental and evolutionary psychologist, says, “No amount of things we give our kids or classes we enroll them in can compensate for what they lose if we don’t allow them plenty of opportunity for free play.” I have fond memories of playing outside as a kid, running around all afternoon until it got dark or until my mom rang the outside bell for dinner. Little did I know that those moments of freedom and fun were teaching much more than I thought. Unstructured, free play is essential for the development of our children. When kids organize their own games, from make-believe to basketball, they’re learning how to communicate, compromise, cooperate, and control themselves. This after-school program is modeled after The Let Grow Play Club founded by four passionate professionals whose mission is “to give kids back the developmentally crucial “vitamin” our culture accidentally removed from childhood: Independence”. The Lower School Choir will learn how to be great choral singers and perform music that is both fun and beautiful. The choir will sing for all of our all-school liturgies and begin preparing for our Christmas Concert in December. Although the Primary Choir meets after school, the choir is an extension of the Primary music program; the choir represents both the Primary Division and the Academy of the Sacred Heart during many events throughout the year. Students are expected to be faithful to rehearsals each week unless illness prevents attendance.

Sensei Sergiy Dolinnyi was the head coach of the National Karate Team of Ukraine in 2018, 2019. Will teach karate etiquette (rules of conduct in the gym), the basic techniques of Olympic karate, physical training and the Japanese names of the techniques taught. It will be a fun and interesting activity! Students wear karate uniforms.

Young karatekas at the end of the 12 week session will be able to take part in the karate exam and receive new belts.
