Sacred Heart alumna Laura Bruce '16, a freshman swimmer at Washington and Lee University, recently qualified and competed at the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships. At the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships, Bruce set a new conference record in the 200 butterfly, winning in 2:04.28 and breaking a record which had stood since 1995. This performance also set a new W&L record in this event. Bruce took second in the 100 butterfly in 55.97 and also placed sixth in the 50 freestyle in 24.41. Additionally, Bruce was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team for the Generals. As a result of these accomplishments, she was named First Team All-Conference and earned an invitation to compete at the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships in Shenandoah, Texas. Bruce was one of eight Washington and Lee women to compete at the NCAA Championships. The W&L team went on to have great success at the meet, with a seventh place finish out of 56 teams - the best finish in program history.
