Sacred Heart alumna Colleen Guste Waguespack '92 was recently featured in a Q & A with Alice, a digital ecosystem that provides universal access to business solutions through innovative technology and educational programming. After graduating from Sacred Heart, Waguespack attended the LSU School of Interior Design. For the past 20 years, she has worked in interior design, and in 2015, she launched Fig & Dove, a couture line of holiday décor featuring beautifully designed, handcrafted items. In 2016, she founded her own interiors business.

What was your biggest discovery in 2017?
The ease of working with artisans in Peru and the quality of their craftsmanship. This year, we traveled to Peru for their annual national trade show and launched an alpaca collection, including Christmas stockings and tree skirts. We were so pleased with our experience in Peru and with the quality of workmanship from this artisan group. Plus, the United States has a bilateral free trade agreement with Peru, which makes importing goods affordable.
What hurdles did you face this year, and how did you navigate them?
We scaled quickly this year, as we fully launched into the wholesale market. One of the challenges we faced was maintaining our high level of craftsmanship, as we manufactured in larger quantities.
After investing heavily into one manufacturer that was not able to meet our sensitive deadlines, we had to turn to legal counsel to help us navigate. One of the biggest lessons learned here is that you can't afford to not have legal counsel, especially when entering into uncharted waters.
