On Saturday, Sept. 15, the Academy of the Sacred Heart participated in "Sacred Heart Global Service Day" to benefit various organizations in the New Orleans area.
The school joined Sacred Heart schools around the world to honor their foundress, St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, and her legacy. The day marked the 200th anniversary since she opened the first Sacred Heart school in America in St. Charles, Missouri.
Approximately 300 students, parents, faculty and administrators in the New Orleans area dedicated their Saturday to volunteering at organizations such as Covenant House, Poydras Home, Ronald McDonald House, Second Harvest Food Bank and more.
Several students, including myself, volunteered at Covenant House, an organization that offers aid to homeless or at-risk teenagers and young adults ranging from age 16 to 22. Covenant House provides these youth with clothing, food and shelter, as well as counseling and job training in order to reintroduce them into society.
