What goes into becoming a two time All-American high school cross country runner? The same thing that goes into making a great South Louisiana gumbo - a ton of ingredients, trial and error, and years of patience until you have perfected the recipe and have a fantastic finished product.
Mary Nusloch '19 is that finished product, as she recently completed her seventh season of cross country and earned her second All-American ranking for finishing three miles in 17 minutes and 48 seconds, which earned her First Gold Standard recognition. Like a great gumbo, Nusloch has gotten better with age and helped lead her team to their third straight 3A State Championship and sixth total in her seven years, with one state runner-up team title in the middle. This year, Nusloch also won her third individual state title in cross country, in addition to an individual runner-up title, in the last four years.
During her seven years of cross country, Nusloch learned many things from her teammates, her practices, her competition, and herself that will no doubt give her an added advantage in the next chapter of her life, wherever that may lead her. Nusloch stepped up to the challenge and surpassed the bar that was set before her. As she leaves the Sacred Heart cross country program, she has now set a new standard for all that will follow in her footsteps.
