Sacred Heart celebrates Bicentennial Mass at St. Louis Cathedral
Posted 11/27/2017 10:20AM

The Academy of the Sacred Heart, which is part of more than 150 Network of Sacred Heart Schools across the globe, celebrated a milestone on November 18—the 200th anniversary of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne's arrival in New Orleans from France. After landing in New Orleans, St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, who was a Religious of the Sacred Heart, traveled to Missouri to establish the first Sacred Heart School in America in 1818, marking the beginning of Sacred Heart education in the New World. The Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans was subsequently founded in 1867, and today there are 24 Sacred Heart Schools in North America.

To commemorate the occasion, members of the Sacred Heart community gathered at St. Louis Cathedral for a Bicentennial Mass, which was celebrated by Archbishop Gregory Aymond and featured a beautiful procession that included Religious of the Sacred Heart sisters, students, alumnae, and other members of the Sacred Heart community. Additionally, Vincent Sciama, French Consul General in Louisiana, presented Headmistress Sr. Melanie Guste, RSCJ, with a proclamation from the French government honoring St. Rose Philippine Duchesne's contribution to Catholic education in the New World. Following Mass, guests enjoyed socializing at a reception at the Old Ursuline Convent.
