Fifth and sixth graders at the Academy of the Sacred Heart have partnered with the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) project to participate in their Adopt-A-Float Program. Sacred Heart adopted a float that will deploy in the Southern Ocean (near Antarctica) to collect data that scientists/researchers will use to better understand the Southern Ocean and climate change. Students will be able to see data in real time and learn about the projects that researchers are using with their float. Dr. Robert Key, oceanographer at Princeton University, visited Sacred Heart on October 22 to discuss the program and Sacred Heart's float, the Cardinalis Cardinalis (scientific name for the Cardinal), which will deploy in December.
