After the long break for the holidays, the varsity soccer team was back in action on January 4 against Lusher. Sometimes a long layoff can be problematic for a team, but the Cardinals showed no signs whatsoever as they came out firing. After a short period of both teams figuring each other out, Sacred Heart took over the run of play and controlled possession. The defensive back line played strong, supporting and complementing the midfield, which found its breakthrough goal from Addie Roemershauser ’19 with a great finish bulging the corner of the net. About midway through the first half, Roemershauser played a beautiful through ball up the sideline to Kamri Washington ’20, who crossed the ball across the box to striker Caroline Evans ’21 for the tap in and the 2-0 halftime lead.
The adjustments for halftime were simple: a few position shifts, more of the same, and finish strong. The Cardinals did exactly that. After a short five-minute push by Lusher, the Cardinals took the game back over and finished strong with a third goal, which was the second goal of the day from Evans. The back line once again smothered the Lusher attack and supported the Cardinals midfield extremely well. The way in which the Cardinals played from start to finish was very impressive, especially given the holiday break. It was a great 3-0 victory!
