The varsity basketball team enjoyed some downtime over the holiday break but were able to squeeze in two games after the new year. On January 3, the Cardinals hosted Pearl River for a mid-morning game. The Cardinals fought hard in the first half and found themselves only down by eight points. However, they were unable to find an answer to Pearl River's outside shooting in the second half. Despite the loss, Elizabeth Brooks '21 notched two three-pointers in the second quarter, and Kam Glasgow '22 finished the game with 12 points.
The Cardinals then traveled to Vandebilt Catholic for a second game later that day. Faced with a tough and experienced opponent, the Terriers proved to be too strong for the young Cardinal team. Vandebilt ended up with nine players scoring, and the Cardinals took a tough loss on the road. Despite the loss, the Cardinals gained some valuable experience from this game.
On the first day back from break, the JV team hosted Chapelle in a very exciting game. The Cardinals led Chapelle early on with a 9-4 first quarter lead and a 13-12 halftime lead. However, the Chipmunks fought back and took a two-point lead going into the final quarter. With added pressure on defense in the final minutes of the game, the Cardinals created two turnovers and scored to tie the game. They held off the Chipmunk pressure in the final seconds to end the final quarter in a tie, 25-25. In two minutes of overtime, Mykhala Coleman '21 scored the only basket and secured the win for the Cardinals.
