Academy of the Sacred Heart senior Elizabeth Coman was named first alternate for the state of Louisiana in the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). Sponsored by the United States Senate and funded by the Hearst Foundations, USSYP is a national initiative that provides a yearly opportunity for outstanding high school students with demonstrated leadership abilities to deepen their understanding of America’s political processes. Now in its 57th year, the program consists of an intensive week-long educational experience in Washington, D.C., where students learn from the highest level elected and appointed officials, as well as a $10,000 college scholarship.
Two students and two alternates from each of the 50 states, Washington D.C., and the Department of Defense Education are selected for this highly competitive, merit-based program each year. More than 5,500 USSYP alumni have gone on to become leaders in government, law, business, education, journalism, the military, medicine, health care, and many other fields.
