With Sacred Heart getting a first round bye in the playoffs, the Cardinals should have gone into their regional playoff match on February 5 against Ascension healed up and well rested. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. The day before the match, starting outside back Eva Dreiling '20 tore her ACL, and Martha Hammet '23 and Sinclair Nolan '23 came down with the flu.
The match started well enough with both teams showing some slight nerves, but the Cardinals took control of the match. However, not even halfway through the first half, well against the run of play, Ascension played a long ball into the box that somehow found its way into the net. The Cardinals didn’t get discouraged, and they continued to press their goal. Nothing would fall, and they entered the half down, 0-1.
The second half started strong for the Cardinals as they started to press high, taking shot after shot, after shot. They simply could not find the back of the net. Then, by sheer accident, a missed kick bounced to Ascension's striker who then shot and scored. With the Cardinals now down 0-2, they threw everything into the attack, finally finding the goal with a great strike from Addie Roemershauser '19. But unfortunately, it was too late, and Sacred Heart fell to Ascension 1-2.
It was a very unfortunate loss for the Cardinals, given that they out shot the Gators, 15-3. But nothing should take away from the incredible season these special young ladies put together. They played with heart, pride, respect, were fearless, and they left it all on the field.
